With spring break just a few days away, it’s time to start packing your bags! Here are a few simple tips that have helped me keep this sometimes overwhelming task pretty manageable.
Assess the situation. The first step in going away always seems to involve cleaning out closets and figuring out who needs what. The sooner you can do this the better. I like to have everything we need–from new shorts to sunscreen–before we start packing the bags.
Take your suitcases out now. Typically about three to four days before we leave, I have my son grab the suitcases from the basement and put them in the bedrooms. It’s a constant reminder not to leave packing to the last minute.
Make a list. I’m sure you’re shocked to see that I work list making into packing, but I do! Now that my children are old enough to pack for themselves, I’ll write down a list of what they should put in their suitcases. For example, it might say “5 pairs of shorts, 5 tee-shirts, 5 pairs of underwear, 1 dressy outfit, bathing suit, toothpaste, hairbrush….” Even my older ones who don’t really need this list say it’s nice to have an idea of what they should bring along. My youngest will make a pile of what I ask him to pull and leave it beside his suitcase and then I check to make sure he has everything before I put it in his bag.
Pack yourself all at once. I find that I’m most efficient if I can pack my own bag all in one sitting. Times when I’ve packed a little here and there, I end up leaving something behind or I’m constantly checking and rechecking my bag.
There have been too many vacations that have started with me being completely stressed out about getting out the door. These little tips help keep the calmness in check.
Happy Spring Break!
